McLEOD, George M.

  General Notes:

According to Toil, Tears and Triumph, George was a twin brother to Murdoch McLeod. It says he married Lily Campbell in Kincardine in 1888 and went off to Oregon. (FM093)
However, in 1885, there is an application for American citizenship for George M. McLeod in Wasco County.(HM0014) It appears he had first immigrated and become an American citizen then returned to Kincardine to marry Lily in 1888 to bring her to their new home.
This is reinforced by the 1900 Kingsley Precinct census which shows George age 43 as head of the family married to Lily age 38 and with 4 children. It says George had been in the US for 19 years (about 1881) and Lily for 12 (1888) and that they'd been married for 12 years (FM334a)

There is a will signed by George M. McLeod, age 46 years on the 12th of August 1902. (HM014a) The petition to the county judge for acceptance of the will gives the date of death the same day as the signing of the will and this is also the date of death on his headstone. The cause of death is unknown but leads one to speculate it was something sudden.
His grave is in the Whitten cemetery in Kingsley. (HM0034k)

• 9 Jan 1900 Census: McLeod George head wife Lily and 4 children Kingsley, Wasco County, Oregon, USA. Family 56: McLeod George Head b June 1856 age 43 Married 12 yrs born Canada E; parents Scottish; Immigrated 1881; 19 yrs in US Farmer Could read and write English.
Lilly wife b Mar 1862 age 38 married 12 yrs. born Canada parents Scottish immigrate 1888 (?) in US 12 years
Children: Stewart H? b Mar 1889 Oregon age 11; Herena? B. b May 1882 Oregon age 9; George F b June 1893 Oregon age 6; Grace E. b Mar/May 1898 Oregon age 2.

George married Elizabeth Jackson (Lily) CAMPBELL, daughter of Archibald CAMPBELL and Ellen McPHERSON, on 8 Feb 1888. (Elizabeth Jackson (Lily) CAMPBELL was born on 22 Mar 1861 in Kincardine, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada and died on 28 Mar 1941 in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon, USA.)

  Marriage Notes:

1900 census appears to have George in US 19 years but Lily only 12 years. Could he have returned to Kincardine to get married ?
