General Notes:
Came to Kincardine Twp in 1853. Settled on the 5th line. Mortgage Registration Date for Lot 12, Conc. 6 Kincardine Twp., Nov. 7, 1881. In 1879 he married Catherine McKay and they had 6 children. Catherine's family, the McKays, had sold their 50 acres on lot 11 to James and Sara Jarrel in 1879 for $1000. In 1889, James and Sara sold this package to their youngest son Elliott, who in turn sold it in 1895 to his older brother John and wife Catherine who remained there till they went to Manitoba in 1913, leaving son George to run the farm. About 1897, the house on E11 was moved across the property line and joined to the house already on Lot 12, making a T-shaped dwelling, which became the Jarrell family home. This 50 acres remained in the Jarrell name til 1956. (Source: Toils,Tears and Triumph-A History of Kincardine Township)
Had been spelling his name, Jarrel, but discovered about 1900 that there were 2 "l's in the name. (REF: FM036b - signature witnessing on 1877 mortgage for John McKay and MaryAnn Finlayson McKay signed with 1 "l") "Took an active interest in the life of the community in which he lived. A bright and sunny disposition." "He was a leading member of the Armow Methodist church and for 20 years was superintendent of the Sunday School" " He was ever staunch on any moral question which was for the uplift of the community". Served as councillor in the Kincardine Township Council for several years. He took a decided stand on the temperance issue, and would vote against his political convictions to uphold its cause. For honest and straight-forwardness, no man stood higher in the estimation of his fellow-men. (Quotes from one of his obituaries)
