1833 Alex born in Cape Breton
22 Dec 1856 Alexander signed a note which was also signed by his mother and several of siblings regarding a sum of stolen money. (FM058)
1857 Alex appears on the 1857 Emigrants list for the Spray as being age 25 which would make his DOB about 1832. (FM224a) His birthday from his headstone is 11 February 1833. (FM241d)
Several articles document his passage with his mother Christina, brother's Archie and William and sister Margaret to NZ from Cape Breton on that vessel. (FM049, FM323, FM059_pg10 and FM224a)
1860's The family residence, known as "Burnside", was built in the 1860's by Alexander who was a talented self-taught carpenter. (pg 10)FM059
3 July1899 There is a letter from sister Catherine to sister Anne in 1899 which says that "Alick has been very unwell again this winter. As you know he is always suffering more or less in the winter from bronchitis". It goes on to say that the eldest daughters are married. One has family of 6, the other has 5. (FM056)

9 December 1901 Alex passed away in Burnside. (FM241d)
Noted events in his life were:
• He immigrated From Cape Breton aboard the brigantine 'Spray' in 1857 to Waipu, New Zealand. Passenger list states Alex was 26 at the time of arrival. According to other dates we have for him, he would have been 24.
Alexander married Flora MACKAY, daughter of Roderick (Sean Rory) MACKAY and Margaret MATHESON, on 28 Feb 1861 in Waipu, New Zealand. (Flora MACKAY was born on 12 May 1837 in Baddeck, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, died on 15 Sep 1905 in Purua, Whangarei, New Zealand and was buried in Sep 1905 in Waipu, New Zealand.)

Note: Spreadsheet from House of Memories FM051 gives marriage date as 28 Feb. This same date is also given in FM059, book by descendent Les Finlayson. IGI gives data as 12 Feb 1861. The former is taken as correct.
